With Hurricane, I wanted to translate the invisible, raw power of a storm into a tangible, 30″ x 40″ visual experience. This piece is less about a literal depiction of a gale and more about the kinetic vibration of the air itself. I utilized sweeping, horizontal white strokes to mimic the shearing force of high-velocity gusts, layering them over a turbulent foundation of deep indigos and electric blues. The application of the oil paint was intentionally restless; I used a combination of broad brushes and palette knives to create a sense of friction and velocity that feels as though the composition might shatter its own boundaries.
In the upper-left quadrant, the pale yellow and amber hues represent that strange, haunting light often seen just before a storm breaks—a fleeting moment of warmth being overtaken by cold atmospheric pressure. I worked quickly to maintain the integrity of the motion, ensuring that the heavy impasto textures caught the light in a way that suggests shifting rain and salt spray. By leaving the edges of the strokes raw and jagged, I hope to place the viewer directly within the eye of the movement, evoking the overwhelming sensory experience of standing against a force that cannot be contained.
