Belle is a commanding large-scale acrylic painting and one of the early works in my ongoing series of line-and-wash paintings. In this body of work, I use acrylic in a way that intentionally evokes the transparency and fluidity of watercolor, while working on a scale far larger than the medium traditionally allows. Executed on a 36″ × 48″ gallery-wrapped canvas, this painting reflects my continued interest in combining minimalist structure with expressive, contemporary figurative language.
The figure is articulated through thick, decisive strokes of black acrylic that establish a powerful, unmistakably modern contour. Her stance—hands set firmly on her hips, gaze directed outward with self-possession—forms the conceptual core of the composition. I was drawn to this moment of unapologetic presence, allowing posture and line to convey confidence without excess detail.
Expressive fields of color are layered with an impressionistic, near-abstract sensibility. Warm terracotta tones, cool blue accents, and soft whites move fluidly across the surface, suggesting light, texture, and motion rather than literal description. These washes are applied with restraint, creating a dialogue between control and release and reinforcing the watercolor-like qualities I am exploring within this series.
At its core, Belle is a meditation on contemporary femininity—self-assured, poised, and distinctly modern. The balance between assertive linework and atmospheric color defines this evolving body of work and reflects my interest in creating figurative paintings that feel both immediate and enduring.
