In this 36″ x 48″ oil on canvas, titled Lower East Side, I wanted to capture the frantic, layered energy of Manhattan’s historic streets—not through literal architecture, but through the visceral weight of the atmosphere. To me, the neighborhood is a collision of history and constant motion. I used deep, moody charcoals and burgundies to ground the composition, representing the grit and the shadows of tenement alleys, while punctuating the space with sharp, neon-like yellows and electric teals to mimic the artificial glow of storefronts and streetlights.
There is a deliberate tension in the brushwork; I balanced heavy, impasto blocks of color against thin, hurried lines that cut across the frame like the blur of a passing train or the web of overhead wires. By layering these disparate tones and textures, I aimed to evoke that specific New York feeling of being hemmed in by stone and steel while simultaneously surrounded by an irrepressible, colorful vibration. The piece is a map of a moment—a reflection of the organized chaos that defines the soul of the city.
