With ‘Promise of Spring’, an oil on paper painting, I wanted to capture the quiet, transitional moment when winter’s chill begins to yield to the first subtle warmth of a new season. The composition is anchored by a vast expanse of rich, deep blues across the upper register, evoking the lingering coolness of the sky, while delicate undertones of soft lavender, pale green, and blush pink emerge below like emerging blossoms.
The surface comes alive through a dynamic interplay of textures, featuring deliberate, sharp horizontal strokes of deep purple that cut across the softer background fields. These distinct lines act as structural anchors, symbolizing the steady progression of time and renewal. Through thick, expressive impasto applications and layered washes, I sought to give the paper a tactile, atmospheric depth that invites the viewer to feel the gentle awakening of nature.
