In Submerged Canopy, an oil on paper abstract painting, I sought to evoke the luminous, immersive feeling of light filtering through dense foliage and deep water. Working directly with oil pigments on paper allowed me to build rich, textured layers while maintaining a sense of fluidity and light transmission.
The composition is anchored by a vibrant palette of deep blues, cool teals, and luminous greens that wash vertically across the surface, mirroring the upward thrust of forest trunks or underwater currents. Splashes of warm peach and bright yellow peek through the cool tones, creating an interplay of light and shadow that gives the piece its atmospheric depth. Through expressive brushwork and varied impasto textures, I wanted to capture a sense of a hidden ecosystem, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and experience an immersive world where earth and water meet.
