With Out of Focus, I wanted to capture that peculiar state of mind when the edges of reality blur and details slip away, leaving only broad swaths of feeling and color.
The painting is structured around horizontal bands of soft pinks, pale sky blues, and muted turquoise, framed by heavy, hazy washes of slate gray. Instead of sharp definitions, the brushstrokes intentionally bleed and soften into one another, mimicking a memory or a landscape viewed through a misty lens.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture helps diffuse the pigment, enhancing the hazy atmosphere. Out of Focus is about embracing the beauty of ambiguity, where clarity isn’t needed to find meaning.
