With Beneath the Quiet Mind, I wanted to explore the contrast between a serene, layered surface and the intense, churning thoughts running just underneath.
The left side of the composition is dominated by calm, horizontal washes of soft green, lavender, and pale blue that evoke a sense of mental tranquility. Pushing aggressively into this quiet space from the right is a heavy, dominant block of deep crimson and charcoal black, thick with impasto texture, representing the hidden turbulence and raw energy rumbling below consciousness.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture provides a subtle ground against the heavy, raised application of paint. Beneath the Quiet Mind is about that constant, delicate balance between outward composure and inner depth.
