With Indian Sunburn, I wanted to capture the fierce, radiant warmth of a tropical day, blending intense solar heat with cool, grounding undertones.
The composition features a dynamic clash of fiery reds, deep ochres, and sunny yellows surging through the center, sharply contrasted against soothing turquoise and deep green washes on the left. Thick impasto and vertical scraping build a dense, textured topography across the board, giving the fiery central column a heavy, tangible weight.
Working in oil on board, the rigid support allows for forceful layering and smooth pulls of paint that evoke the raw energy of blazing light. Indian Sunburn is about heat, contrast, and the striking intensity of nature’s vibrant color palette.
