With Hauntingly Expensive, a 9×12 inch oil on paper painting, I wanted to explore the tension between opulent allure and unsettling depth. Through this painting, I sought to capture a dramatic, high-contrast atmosphere of decadent weight and mystery, utilizing sweeping palette knife layers, rich impasto textures, and striking luminous highlights.
Created as an original oil on paper painting measuring 9×12 inches, the piece features a glowing sky of vibrant yellow and pale gold shadowed by dark purple overhead clouds, juxtaposed against a heavy lower foreground of deep magenta, dark crimson, and shadowy black slashed with curved white impasto ribbons. I applied energetic horizontal scraping techniques and thick knife strokes to give the oil medium a raw, luxurious, and spectral quality.
