Elena is a refined exploration of the purity, strength, and expressive essence of the human form, and one of the first paintings in my ongoing series of line-and-wash works. Created in acrylic on a 36″ × 48″ gallery-wrapped canvas, this series is intentionally designed to evoke the delicacy and fluidity of watercolor while existing on a much larger scale than the medium typically allows.
Rather than pursuing literal realism, I distill the figure to its most essential qualities, focusing on energy, movement, and presence. The form is defined by bold, graphic black contours that reference the immediacy of ink and calligraphic gesture. These confident, architectural lines establish the structure of the composition and give the figure a sense of quiet strength and authority.
Balancing this structural framework are translucent washes of warm amber and soft blush tones. Applied with restraint, these layers suggest warmth, shifting light, and subtle shadow without fully resolving the figure. Organic drips and fluid transitions are intentionally preserved, introducing softness and movement and reinforcing the watercolor-like quality I am exploring in this body of work.
At its core, Elena is a study in harmony—between strength and delicacy, control and spontaneity. The dialogue between assertive linework and atmospheric color defines this new series and reflects my interest in creating figurative works that feel both contemporary and quietly timeless.
