With this piece, I wanted to capture the sun-faded tranquility, ocean breezes, and warm twilight nostalgia of the Florida Keys.
The composition transitions smoothly from a layered upper expanse of seafoam greens, pale chartreuse, and soft aquamarine into a serene horizon of dusty lavender, resting above a deep, anchoring foundation of midnight blue and navy along the bottom. Smooth, horizontal squeegee drags and thick impasto scrapes sweep across the surface, creating a rhythmic ebb and flow of tide-like bands and slivers of glowing lime light that draw the viewer straight toward the distant horizon.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture grounds the heavy paint layers while allowing the rough, energetic tool marks to stand out with raw intensity. Memories of Key West is about that lingering, quiet bliss as twilight settles over tropical waters.
