One of the things I enjoy most about abstract painting is pairing a playful title with a painting that encourages curiosity. Two Red Stripes Walk into a Bubble Gum Factory is meant to make you smile before you even begin looking closely. It doesn’t explain the painting—it simply opens the door to imagination.
As I painted this piece, I allowed the composition to evolve naturally through layers of oil paint. Soft pinks, bright yellows, turquoise blues, and lavender gradually found their balance, creating a surface that feels both energetic and lighthearted. The two bold red vertical stripes emerged near the end of the process, immediately becoming the focal point. To me, they almost feel like two characters wandering through an unfamiliar world, confidently making their way across a landscape of color and texture.
I rarely begin a painting with a fixed destination in mind. Instead, I respond to each brushstroke, palette knife mark, scrape, and drip, allowing the painting to tell me what it needs next. That conversation between intention and spontaneity is what keeps abstract painting endlessly fascinating. Every layer leaves behind traces of earlier decisions, creating depth and subtle moments that continue to reveal themselves over time.
Although the title is humorous, I hope the painting also reminds viewers not to overthink everything they see. Abstract art doesn’t need to be solved like a puzzle. Sometimes it’s enough to simply enjoy the colors, the movement, and the emotions they create. If the title makes you laugh, and the painting invites you to linger a little longer, then I feel it’s done exactly what I hoped it would.
This original oil painting is one of a kind, created entirely by hand using layered oil paint and expressive mark-making. My goal is always to create paintings that reward repeated viewing—works that continue to reveal new textures, relationships, and unexpected moments every time you return to them. Sometimes all it takes is two red stripes, a bubble gum factory, and a willingness to let your imagination do the rest.
