Description: View Through the Birches is a deeply personal piece that reflects my lifelong connection to the northern wilderness — particularly the tranquil lakes and boreal forests of Ontario and the Canadian Shield, places that have always felt like home to me. I wanted this painting to feel like a quiet moment of discovery, the kind you stumble upon while walking a wooded trail.
I chose to frame the composition with a stand of white birch trees, their textured bark rendered in thick, expressive strokes to capture their distinctive character. The shimmering green and gold leaves suggest that moment in late spring or early summer when everything feels fresh and alive.
Beyond the birches, I painted the lake as a mirror — still and glass-like — drawing the eye inward toward its peaceful surface. The reflection of the trees and sky speaks to the quiet symmetry I often find in nature. On the far side of the water, layers of dense evergreens rise in shades of deep green and cool blue, evoking the rich depth and mystery of untamed wilderness.
In this piece, my oil technique draws inspiration from the Canadian Group of Seven, whose bold brushwork and reverence for the land have always resonated with me. I strive to bring a similar emotional honesty to my work — one that honors both the grandeur and intimacy of the natural world.
When viewers stand before this painting, I hope they feel what I felt while creating it: a moment of stillness, a breath of fresh air, and the quiet magic of being surrounded by nature.
