In Mind Over Matter, an oil on paper abstract painting, I sought to explore the profound triumph of mental clarity and willpower over physical weight and resistance. Working directly with oil pigments on paper allowed me to build a heavily textured, layered surface where physical mass and ethereal energy actively collide.
The upper and mid registers feature stacked, structured horizontal bands of deep magenta, dusty rose, and muted red, crossed by calming strokes of pale turquoise and frosty blue. Grounding the lower portion of the composition is a heavy, dark mass of charcoal and black, paired with a sharp flash of red at the base, creating a sense of dense physical gravity. Rising out of this dark foundation is a looping, contemplative spiral form in gray that seems to untangle the surrounding chaos. Through this dynamic contrast of heavy, physical elements and luminous, focused strokes, I wanted to evoke a sense of mental ascendancy—a visual testament to the mind’s power to rise above heavy constraints.
