With Stormy Seas, I wanted to capture the fierce, untamed power of open waters whipped up by a violent gale.
The composition is split between a churning, deep black upper sky and a vibrant, textured field of brilliant blues below, mimicking the violent clash of water and wind. Thick, impasto brushstrokes scrape across the surface, creating a turbulent rhythm of whitecaps and dark undertows that pull the viewer straight into the storm.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture grounds the heavy paint layers while allowing the rough, energetic marks to stand out with raw intensity. Stormy Seas is about that electrifying rush of standing against the elements when nature unleashes its full force.
