With this piece, I wanted to capture the open-road freedom, winding curves, and cinematic nostalgia of America’s most iconic highway stretching across the vast landscape.
The composition is swept in an expansive curve of dusty rose and mauve pink that loops across a sky of cool slate blue and overcast grey, framing a central asphalt band of forest green, chartreuse, and warm earth tones below. Thick, impasto brushstrokes and long, sweeping squeegee arcs drag across the paper, creating a dynamic rhythm of highway lanes, atmospheric dust, and roadside terrain that pulls the viewer straight into the motion of the drive.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture grounds the heavy paint layers while allowing the rough, energetic tool marks to stand out with raw intensity. Route 66 is about that timeless pull of the open highway—chasing the horizon across the heartland with miles of asphalt ahead.
