In The Watchers, I wanted to capture the quiet, persistent feeling of being observed by silent guardians standing vigil in the shadows.
The composition is structured around dark, monolithic shapes of solid obsidian black and muted slate-grey, set against an expansive background of pale sage green, mint, and luminous lime-yellow accents in the upper right. Broad, rectangular palette knife scrapes and thick impasto blocks stack vertically and horizontally across the paper, creating a heavy, architectural rhythm of sentinel-like forms and weathered surfaces that draw the viewer straight into the mysterious gaze of the composition.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture grounds the heavy paint layers while allowing the rough, energetic tool marks to stand out with raw intensity. The Watchers is about that lingering sense of presence—unspoken, watchful, and anchored in quiet authority.
