With “Electric Valentine,” I wanted to explore the tension between vulnerability and raw power. At 11″ × 14″, this abstract oil painting balances bold gestures with quieter moments, allowing the composition to shift between softness and intensity.
The vivid pinks represent energy, passion, and fearless optimism, while the charcoal blacks and smoky grays introduce resistance, uncertainty, and the weight that every moment of growth carries with it. Rather than blending everything into harmony, I allowed these opposing forces to collide, overlap, and leave their marks across the surface. Those collisions became the painting’s true subject.
I worked intuitively, building the composition through expressive brushwork and layered applications of oil paint. Every stroke was a response to the one before it, creating a rhythm that feels spontaneous while slowly revealing an underlying structure. Thick passages of paint contrast with transparent veils, inviting the eye to move through the painting and discover new relationships between color, texture, and movement.
To me, Electric Valentine is about finding beauty in contradiction. It is both delicate and aggressive, chaotic yet balanced, familiar yet impossible to fully define. Like music played at full volume, I wanted this painting to be experienced emotionally before it is understood intellectually.
