In Ice on Mars, an oil on paper abstract painting, I sought to explore the striking juxtaposition of barren, iron-rich planetary landscapes and the sudden, anomalous presence of frozen elements. Working directly with oil pigments on paper allowed me to build rich, textured layers that capture both the flat expanse of dust and the heavy, sculptural weight of ice.
A vast, dominant field of deep crimson and fiery red stretches across the composition, creating an intense, atmospheric horizon that evokes the rust-covered terrain of a distant world. Breaking through this warm expanse are bold, thick blocks of vibrant turquoise and icy blue, applied with heavy impasto strokes that sit sharply on the surface. Through this dramatic collision of opposing temperatures and expressive textures, I wanted to evoke a sense of otherworldly isolation—a stark, poetic encounter where brilliant blue frost cuts across a sea of crimson red.
