In La Playa, I wanted to capture the tranquil breeze, gentle surf, and serene horizon of a sun-bleached coastal shoreline.
The composition is framed by a overcast, lavender-grey sky above, transitioning into a luminous band of turquoise waters and chartreuse sun glints across the middle horizon, resting upon a broad, weathered expanse of sandy white and pale grey foreground tones. Thick, impasto brushstrokes and smooth horizontal squeegee drags sweep across the surface, creating a rhythmic, tide-like flow of scraped textures and soft surf foam that draw the viewer straight into the water’s edge.
Working in oil on paper, the absorbent texture grounds the heavy paint layers while allowing the rough, energetic tool marks to stand out with raw intensity. La Playa is about that meditative, restorative quiet found where the tide meets the land.
