In Midnight Cargo, an oil on paper abstract painting, I sought to capture the heavy, mysterious atmosphere of industrial transport moving through the dead of night. Working directly with oil pigments on paper allowed me to build dense, textured layers that convey a sense of hidden weight and structural depth.
Deep, shadowy blacks and rich magentas dominate the upper and background registers, setting a nocturnal tone filled with secrecy and shadow. Cutting sharply across the composition are thick, impasto blocks of vibrant, electric blue that form a structural mass, evoking the presence of a vessel or cargo container hauling through the dark. Vertical scratched lines and drips cut down through the blue and black fields like rain or steel cables, adding a raw, linear rhythm to the surface. Through this interplay of dark shadows, rich crimson-magenta tones, and brilliant cobalt blue, I wanted to evoke a sense of nocturnal transit—a quiet, powerful movement unseen across the dark waters or open roads.
