With Scratching Post, I wanted to channel the playful, tactile instincts of feline curiosity and the raw textures of a surface left behind by sharp claws.
The composition is built across an expansive field of soft sandy yellow and bright spring green, anchored on the left by heavy, structural blocks of deep blue and charcoal black. Cutting sharply down through the canvas are thin, vertical dark scratches that leave distinct marks across the layers, mirroring the physical impact of a cat leaving its mark.
Working in oil on paper, the thick impasto holds a heavy, raised presence against the absorbent background. Scratching Post is about that instinctual desire to scratch, explore, and alter the surface of the world around us.
