In Strata of Memory, an oil on paper abstract painting, I sought to explore how past experiences layer, overlap, and evolve over time just like geological strata. Working directly with oil pigments on paper allowed me to build thick, tactile blocks of color while letting softer, more translucent washes peek through the surface.
Bold horizontal sweeps of rich crimson and muted taupe anchor the upper portion, contrasting sharply with structural fields of soft peach, creamy beige, and dusty rose that cut across the middle. Toward the lower right, deep indigo and vibrant blues surge upward, introducing an unexpected emotional current that breaks through the calmer layers. Through this interplay of scraped textures, heavy impasto, and contrasting cool and warm tones, I wanted to capture the physical weight of recollection and the way time buries and reveals fragments of our personal histories.
