With What I Saw at 3am, a 9×12 inch oil on paper painting, I wanted to explore the disorienting, haunting clarity of a midnight awakening and the strange forms that emerge in the dark. Through this painting, I sought to capture a fleeting, uncanny apparition suspended between dream and reality, utilizing sweeping impasto loops, dark gestural line work, and a moody, nocturnal palette.
Created as an original oil on paper painting measuring 9×12 inches, the piece features a central, spectral figure constructed from stacked oval loops of lilac, soft violet, and pale white paint, set against a deep background of shadowy plum, maroon, and charcoal black. I applied thick brushstrokes, linear etchings, and directional impasto strokes across the paper to give the oil medium a raw, eerie presence that echoes sleep-deprived visions and late-night mysteries.
