Melancholy

In “Melancholy,” I chose to step away from complex layering to focus on the raw, heavy weight of emotion through bold color blocking and texture. Measuring 48″ x 60″, this piece utilizes a stark, somber black backdrop to isolate a central mass of fleshy pink, representing a vulnerable, exposed state of being. The title reflects the quiet, often heavy stillness of sadness, which I’ve personified through the thick, impasto application of the oil paint, giving the colors a physical presence that feels almost architectural.

A sharp, horizontal bar of vibrant yellow crowns the composition, offering a jarring contrast that feels like a fading memory or a distant light. The three vertical yellow drips cutting through the pink are intentional interruptions—lines of tension that suggest tears or the slow passage of time. By placing my signature emblem in the bottom right corner, I wanted to ground this expansive exploration of internal struggle, inviting the viewer to sit with the discomfort and find the subtle beauty within the heaviness of the composition.
