With Hidden in the Deep, I wanted to capture the mysterious, submerged realms where light barely penetrates and secrets are kept far below the surface.
The composition is anchored by a dark, fathomless recess of deep indigos and blacks at the center, surrounded by sweeping currents of brilliant cobalt and electric blue. Above this heavy, aquatic abyss, fiery layers of magenta and rich crimson break across the upper canvas like a distant reflection or sunset fading into the sea.
Working in oil on paper, the thick impasto holds a heavy, textured relief against the absorbent background, giving the surface a tangible, weathered depth. Hidden in the Deep is about diving past the visible layers of reality into the quiet, unknown mysteries that lie underneath.
